The word “neighborhood” can be taken to have many different
meanings. Does your neighborhood contain the people on your block, the people
on your street, or your entire town? It
all depends on how you look at the idea of being a neighbor. I believe that your neighborhood consists of
all the people that you have a chance to come into contact with in your daily lives.
For example, it would consist of all the people that you may meet while taking
your dog for a walk in the morning or the people who you see every day in
Starbucks before heading to work every morning.
A
neighborhood can also be classified by the similar landscape of an area. An example of this would be a college campus,
such as the University of Nevada, Reno.
While walking through this beautiful campus, it is not hard to realize
that each individual building makes up a part of the unique terrain of the
university. Even though many of the
buildings were built at different times, they all have a sense of community
attached to them and they all seem to fit perfectly in their own location.
Most of
all, the people and their way of interacting with one another is the way that
neighborhoods are defined. While walking
around UNR, one can notice the friendly spirits of all the students who attend
the university. It is not uncommon for
people who you have never meet before to say hi and smile as you pass by. This generates a neighborly attitude that
many of the students posses.
Another
aspect that relates to forming a neighborhood is the people in the neighborhood
all having one common goal that becomes a uniting factor. At UNR, the students
are all working towards gaining an education and that really creates a
neighborly feeling. I went to a music
festival this weekend, and it was very simple to recognize the boundaries of
this festival (which could be considered a neighborhood), because everyone who
was participating in this festival all wanted to have a good time while
listening to good music. We were all there to achieve a certain goal, and it
was the uniting factor of music that made thousands of complete strangers
become neighbors for a weekend.
